On Writing Poetry
Write a poem?
Me? I couldn't.
I'd mess it up...
I really shouldn't.
I can never get
my words to rhyme;
It's a waste of space,
It's a waste of time.
I don't know the structure,
Don't understand form;
It sounds cold and hollow
when I want it to sound warm.
Write a poem?
They'd laugh at me.
Whispers and stares,
Sneers I can't see.
So it's best not to try...
Don't you agree?
Give up this idea
Of writing poetry?
I'll just set down my pen
And turn out the light...
But what if I don't?
What if I just write?
I'll give it a whirl,
I'll try just this once;
I'm sure I can do it,
So... that's it now. I'm done.
